So, the total value of the top five superyachts sold in 2022 was over €500,000,000. Again, off market deals are excluded.This reflects a 100 percent increase in the total value of the top five most expensive used yachts sold in 2023. Mind you, if we include off-market deals as well, the value of the five largest used yachts sold in 2023 versus the five largest in 2022 is still up year-on-year by a more modest 56 percent, from about €700 million in 2022 to about €1.1 billion in 2023.Moreover, with many new-build slots already booked until 2026/2027, particularly for the larger yachts, there's a notable trend of more Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (UHNWIs) investing additional capital in acquiring used superyachts. This trend is reflected in the average volume for this year, which stands at 352 gross tonnes (GT) compared to 300 GT in 2022. There have been several brokers and company owners whom I have admired both for their business ethics and as people. During my career, I have also found several clients who have greatly inspired me. As a broker, you develop personal relationships and consequently, you understand more about the complexity of business, pleasure and knowledge. Please tell us more about this impressive sale and the challenges of selling a yacht her size?It was a long story of entrepreneurial endurance. When I first became involved in that project it was nothing more than an idea in the head of a Chinese shipyard owner who wanted to build one family yacht at his yard, and a second one for the market. The initial ideas they proposed were good, but needed to be finetuned and modified to superyacht standards; naval architecture, interior design , engineering etc. When this was in place the big financial crisis occurred and the project was shelved. The shipyard was sold to a large Chinese conglomerate and that made the negotiations even more complex. All the people involved were doing their best but they were learning by doing, so a lot was lost in translation. When the yacht finally began construction we introduced her to the market during the Monaco Yacht show party of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a> in the old yacht club. It was a big success and within a year, the yacht was sold. In addition, the number of units produced in full custom is too low to have a real ‘trend’. There are certain style elements, such as the ‘explorer’ look, large floor-to-ceiling windows and ‘origami’ fold-out transformer beach clubs which become trends. Essentially, yacht layouts shift slightly every few years.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/249212/image/large-7810e73ced7071045d8f4099ec0b6880.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/249212">Sustainability remains an important topic within the yachting industry, how has this influenced your strategy when selling yachts?I don’t have a strategy as such. A broker should follow the wishes of the client and not attempt to put their own personal agenda or preferences in the foreground. We are delivering a service that should be 100% around the clients’ ideas, intentions, and wishes. We need to be sure that we are extremely knowledgeable in any field a client wants to explore further. If it is sustainability, then we better ensure we know all the possible sustainable options and present them in a coherent way, only then can the client make an informed and educated decision.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/44971/image/large-f63ccec4d8dd513f4a92955293e37812.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/44971">What challenges are brokers in the yachting industry currently facing?A combination of the above. In today’s world, there is a lot of superficial communication which is only skin deep. As a broker in yachting it is important to make sure that the client is well-educated and informed when it comes to the different subjects involved in owning yachts. We saw a lot of buyers during the covid years who had no idea what yachting was about. They thought it was like buying a car or an apartment, but they were not informed about crewing, operating, maintaining, and legal structures related to yachting. The challenge we are currently facing is ensuring individuals less experienced in the brokerage field inform the client properly. The level of professionalism within a brokerage company has nothing to do with the size of the company, it is determined by mindset and professional and personal ethics.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/192453/image/large-d2e1509ae2b9c1f19d45afc18504a125.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/192453">Yacht sales require a sophisticated understanding of the market and your clients' needs. How do you stay informed about the latest market trends and ensure your clients' preferences are met?Keep on studying, visit yards, talk to designers, inform yourself about technology, and legal matters and visit as many yachts as you possibly can so you maintain a strong reference point throughout your career. Don’t hesitate to inform a client that you will provide an answer for them the following day if you don’t have the information readily available. Yachting has many different disciplines, so you can’t know everything at once.Networking is crucial in the yacht industry, how do you create trust with your clients to ensure they feel content throughout the sales process?Just show you are knowledgeable, listen to them instead of talking all the time and simply have the empathy to find out what they want. Remain humble and recognise that as brokers we make our living thanks to the clients and we have a duty to inform and assist them in the best possible way.&nbsp;What trends and developments do you expect to see for the future of the yachting industry?I hope the industry will become increasingly professional. Jeremey stated that the new Le-Panorama office, which the team moved into in August, is “three times the size of the previous office, now with a team of ten.”Jeremy also discussed sales, sharing that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/833" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Denison Yachting (Company)">Denison</a> Europe has sold 13 yachts in the last year, totalling approximately €70 million. In terms of central agreements, he focused on the 21 current listings with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/833" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Denison Yachting (Company)">Denison</a> in Europe, for a total value of €90 million in central listings and emphasised that two of these yachts are new builds.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/833" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Denison Yachting (Company)">Denison</a>’s charter side of the business has also experienced recent expansion, with Charter Management joining in Europe from January 2023. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/833" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Denison Yachting (Company)">Denison</a> currently holds eight charter yachts in the European flee, the largest of which is the flagship 50.92-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aresteas50.92m (167'1&quot;)Aresteas Yachting2017">Aresteas</a> yacht. Reflecting on the recent charter season, Jeremy claimed while it does not necessarily meet expectations, this appears to have been the case across the industry and his outlook for next year looks more positive, with multiple bookings and enquiries for 2024.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/288173/image/large-3a365e2cbe164e22ff2cf1013440bd01.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/288173">Looking to the future of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/833" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Denison Yachting (Company)">Dension</a> Europe Jeremy stated, “The outlook currently looks positive. The market has definitely had an adjustment compared to the 2021/22 highwater, but there is still lots of demand, enquiries remain high, and there is increased traction in securing CAs. The focus going forward is to expand footprint with locations considered in Palma, London, Istanbul, and Dubai.”

Jim Evans, founder and Managing Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYachtsMonaco (Company)">SuperYachtsMonaco</a>, has more than two decades of experience in the industry and is an expert in new-build construction, with a penchant for explorer yachts. We started the business in the darkest of times during the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 yet by a combination of persistence and keeping overheads low we survived and began to grow organically.&nbsp;We wouldn’t wish to be hubristic but it has been somewhat satisfying to prove doubters and detractors wrong in their predictions of an early demise for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYachtsMonaco (Company)">SuperYachtsMonaco</a>! Instead of falling by the wayside, I think we have become well-established and respected in the yachting industry with a loyal clientele and impressive year-on-year growth. Obviously we faced the same hiatus as others during the Covid19 lockdown periods of recent years but we have also enjoyed the boom that followed it too. We have built a highly experienced team working in a positive and cooperative corporate culture which is very much to the benefit of our clients.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259988/image/large-4fbe93c563dd7338db6fb50f3dc847e4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259988">What is your vision for the next five, or even fifteen years for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYachtsMonaco (Company)">SuperYachtsMonaco</a>?The vision that James, Alex and I have for the next five years is to maintain our high standards of customer service and to continue to grow the company in the same organic manner. We have never been about quantity in terms of the size of our team but rather we build up on the basis of quality.&nbsp;The company’s DNA is something we have always taken great care of – and that won’t change. We can definitely see certain areas in which we can bolster our offerings and do better. The challenge that all established companies and reputable brokers have today is in dealing with a much more crowded brokerage space and therefore how to differentiate. We have various strategic plans for how to tackle the changing market and naturally those include a smart approach to data management and a closer embrace of the rapidly evolving digital environment.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/8481/image/large-2351a77d3ba34948bceaf51e87c082ae.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/8481">Consultancy is a major part of brokerage – but how do you actually steer buyers to their perfect yacht? And is the process different for first-time buyers?Consultancy is indeed an integral part of the process and the quality of that consultancy is a huge differentiator amongst brokers. It is a statement of the obvious to say that it is vital to listen carefully to a client’s stated requirements at the outset of any inquiry. The skill is in our interpretation of that requirement and the resulting guidance we bring to it. “Steer” is not a word I would readily apply to our approach at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYachtsMonaco (Company)">SuperYachtsMonaco</a>. Our objective is always for the client to arrive at his or her final decision independently following our provision of accurate information and of balanced and logical opinions based on our deep knowledge of the market.First-time Buyers present a slightly different challenge but it is rare for anyone to purchase a yacht without any prior knowledge or experience, perhaps of chartering. We might find ourselves needing to explain in more detail the various aspects of ownership such as OpEx, regulatory issues and crewing etc. but fundamentally it is the same process.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/258825/image/large-f12611b3b5c9ff29fcbfa5bdeab4cfdb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/258825">2021 and 2022 have both been banner years with yacht sales. What do you anticipate for 2023, especially given such a lacking inventory of quality yachts on the market?The lack of inventory is certainly an issue at the moment although it is arguably a better problem to have than oversupply and a dearth of buyers. The question on everyone’s mind is whether the recession will bite in 2023 and if there will be reduced demand in the market.&nbsp;Sitting here in February it is a tough one to call. Governments make their various adjustments to rates and stave off immediate economic pain but we wonder if these measures are only a band-aid. Arguably there are early signs that demand has slowed both in the sales and charter arenas but when Spring is just around the corner we remain hopeful for a positive year.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/58347/image/large-aff93d258e58d91574859959f1a7b4be.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/58347">And how has this impacted pricing – are yachts selling above market value?Over the last 18 months the data shows that some yachts have sold above market value and if not actually selling above market value then at a minimum we can say that asking prices have held pretty firm and sellers have been achieving close to their objectives. We are experiencing some cooling now, yet we are of the mind that barring global economic disaster the lack of inventory will offset a reduction in demand and the market will remain fundamentally buoyant.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213165/image/large-63f2109c57501d0d15da5336e6ac5876.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213165">Has there been a growing interest in the new-build, refit and conversion markets?Based on the figures you have at SuperYacht Times and the wider data it is clear that the new build order book is very strong. That order book is influenced by various factors but importantly the number of UHNWI worldwide is increasing year on year which ultimately means more superyacht buyers in the market. When that pool of buyers is faced with a limited inventory the natural progression is for shipyards to see more orders for new build yachts. Similarly with conversions as a means to achieve an accelerated delivery.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/253008/image/large-a4c128affcc6081a788d2312a9fe6f39.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/253008">Many brokerage houses have consolidated in recent years. Is this something&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYachtsMonaco (Company)">SuperYachtsMonaco</a>&nbsp;is considering?Yes it is something we have considered and will continue to consider as sensible business owners. With the right alignment of stars, we would not rule it out. We have observed from the sidelines and see some consolidations which we view as successful and others that don’t make sense to us….. so, we take a very pragmatic approach to it.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/207882/image/large-877ca095a575c77bb3aaefe87b8cb681.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/207882">In light of the seizure of Russian-owned yachts, should yacht brokers play a role to improve the external perception of yachting?Yacht brokers should indeed play an important role in influencing the external perception of yachting. There is a great deal of misinformation about yachts and the yachting industry in the mainstream media and an absence of fact-checking in publications like the Daily Mail which can create a negative public perception that tars us all with the same brush.&nbsp;Everyone involved in this industry ought to be very active in counteracting this by offering a narrative that tells of ethical behaviour in the business, strict adherence to KYC requirements and zero tolerance for anything that might contravene international sanctions. By the same token, we also are also careful to guard against blanket Russophobia and hysteria.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/96020/image/large-bcc9b52037ed721131ea7422606adaa8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96020">Any closing thoughts on the direction yachting is heading?We believe the yachting industry will continue to show impressive growth although the processes will evolve and become more digital. The industry as a whole is resistant to change but it is inevitable that clients will come to expect the same efficiencies and cost savings offered by increasingly sophisticated software and digital applications that impact other industries. Hans van Doornmalen has been a great run of sales since joining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> nearly eight years ago. He’s sold a number of yachts that exceed the 40-metre mark, and is one of the only brokers to secure a deal with cryptocurrencies.&nbsp;SuperYacht Times sat down with Hans for an exclusive interview, to hear more about the state of the market and how to survive with such a squeeze on inventory. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254348/image/large-e75d650e8e7a1b1de6815767185336c1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254348">Hans, can you briefly introduce yourself and how you got into brokerage?A long story short; my parents bought a pleasure boat in the year 2000 and ever since we have spent every summer with the family on the water. It was during these precious moments that I realised that I wanted to work in a yachting environment and was hoping to combine my passion for yachting with my daily job.&nbsp;Following a brief period in the Dutch Navy, I found a business school in the Netherlands with a focus on yachting combined with commerce (IVA Driebergen). In 2011 I started a weekend job at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/9" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Valk Yacht Brokers (Company)">De Valk Yacht Brokers'</a> head office in Loosdrecht, where I slowly but surely started to get more and more into the yacht broking side of the business.&nbsp;I then undertook an internship at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/86" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amico & Co. s.r.l. (Company)">Amico</a> shipyard in 2014 and after my graduation at the IVA Driebergen in the Netherlands, I was hired by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> for their Montenegro office. Following that experience, the company offered me a long-term contract based out of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> Monaco office, where I am currently still working with pleasure and full of motivation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/191625/image/large-a0fa175d2911c86c56888bca91d42424.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/191625">Last year you sold the 40m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4627" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oryx40.2m (131'11&quot;)Benetti SpA2013">Oryx</a>, one of a handful of sales with cryptocurrencies. Can you see these types of transactions becoming more commonplace?I do think it will be more common that some clients wish to do a transaction in cryptocurrencies; however, I believe that most of the transactions for the coming decade will be in ‘’normal’’ regulated currencies, above all in USD and Euro.&nbsp;The biggest advantage of cryptocurrency is that the transaction is almost instantaneous, which is a huge relief when the yacht is out at sea in international waters. However, as cryptocurrencies are not universally accepted, it will take quite some time and likely regulation for these types of transactions to become commonplace.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248440/image/large-ac3add3d30a10331a59efccf786fa175.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248440">Many of your sales were concluded either in-house or off-market at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>. Is this reflective of how the brokerage house operates?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> is a close-knit team that really cooperates with one another. We share a lot of intelligence within the team which in turn allows all of us brokers to better advise our clients. In my opinion, this certainly contributes to a high sales-per-broker ratio, in-house sales and off-market transactions. The statistics speak for themselves. &nbsp;And how do you advise your clients on marketing strategies to make transactions as smooth as possible when selling ‘quietly’?Make sure you choose people that you trust so that you are acting as a close team. Then the team should choose the right stakeholders based on a proven track record and longstanding relationships.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254544/image/large-583075fc3aeab7f0a2ee68a594a88ade.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254544">With yachts being sold in record time, is there a lack of inventory of quality used yachts?I think there is indeed. Personally, I have currently more buyers looking to buy than owners looking to sell. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, while her interiors derived from the drawing boards of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6663" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Q London (Company)">Q London</a>. Project Fox’s steel hull and aluminium superstructure have been constructed to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1457" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RINA (Company)">RINA</a> commercial classification and she boasts a bold, muscular profile. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/299495/image/large-dcc81a4e036608a75cba3d9115929e94.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/299495">Regarding accommodation, Project Fox can accommodate up to 10 guests across her five spacious staterooms, taken care of by a crew of seven. Displaying a strong exterior and extensive 103.5-square-metre main deck aft, Project Fox has been designed with world cruising in mind and boasts a large carrying capacity for a yacht of her size. Warm-toned Poltrona Frau sofas blend with pale beige and grey detailing. Like the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a.
